Crocheting granny squares

completed granny square

After my last crocheting experiment a good friend set me right when she said – Bec your first try at crocheting was shit. Boy was she right.

And, even though my first try was pretty awful, I still enjoyed it. Plus I had bought four crochet hooks and so couldn’t give up after my first try.

A few friends suggested that I try to crochet a granny square as my second try. It was good advice. There are heaps and heaps of YouTube videos and blogs out there that show you how to crochet a granny square. I watched quite a few. My issue was they often expected some crochet knowledge and I had absolutely none.

So I had a few cracks and still failed. How hard could this crochet business be?

Finally I found this great little blog – Bunny Mummy – and it all clicked. I also changed the size of my crochet from an I to an H. Not sure what the secret was, but I don’t care, as I finally nailed one square. In case you are wondering it is the one on the right below, not the left!

Next up, a blanket. Okay, that might be a bit ambitious… maybe just another square!

Good on you Bec for giving crocheting a go. I can remember crocheting when I was a kid, I seem to recall being able to go forward but not backward! My nana was a brlliant crocheter, if there is such a word, and in the linen press I have a full table place mat and coaster setting. If only it would come back in fashion to be able to be used. For the time being ill just have to stick with one of the many rugs she’s made on Olivia’s bed.
Keep at it, this will be a lost art in years to come, :) !
